Cypress Gardens Central Florida's First Theme Park and
Longest Running Tourist Attraction by Anthony Scaggs
On January 2, 1936, the gates opened on what would become a showplace for 8,000 varieties of plants from more than 90 different countries. In 1938, the first electric boats began gliding through the tropical canals. There are many stories about Dick Pope's vision and generosity. One favorite is the "Honeymoon Almost Missed". Mr. Pope was walking the grounds when he came across a crying newly wed. He inquired as to the problem when she tearfully told him that their car would not start and they were going to miss their airplane and honeymoon. Smiling, he reached into his pocket and gave her the keys to his brand new car.
The couple returned from their honeymoon and decided that they had to work for this amazingly generous man. They work at Cypress Gardens to this day. Dick Pope's determination and generosity was passed on to the staff and entertainers.
