Real Golf Men Do Spa

Sonnenalp Resort
Vail, Colorado

Part 1

by Martha Hollis
Golf Clubs, Golf Resorts, Golf Courses

Some men claim, "spas are only for women," men are rugged and do not need that kind of pampering.” Our recent experience at Sonnenalp spa at Vail, proved that just the opposite,

men can love spas and enhance their masculinity.

He went to Sonnenalp Resort for Ski and Tee, that special time when the ski season is drawing to a close and the warm spring days make the ice a little slushy. The crowds are gone making for tremendously enjoyable downhilling. In the valley, the sun has warmed up the golf course, the grass has begun to renew, it may be a touch soggy, but that makes for more course variation. The ball gets to try new paths with new drags and detours, more challenges.

I went to Sonnenalp for a Spa-tacular program, spa treatments, yoga, snowshoeing, hiking, and swimming outdoors in the heated pool. It was my chance to mellow and be, well in all honestly, spoiled.

As he had complained about muscle soreness and the need for stretching in golf I signed him up, with his consent of course, for yoga the first morning. We were both surprised to discover that the teacher was a specialist in “sports conditioning yoga” with golf being a subspecialty. And was she terrific explaining howto work at your own pace while demonstrating how the various moves and poses could affect the golf swings and overall fitness. Well he was there bright and early for every yoga session and is now using her tape at home for excellent benefit.

Before heading out for my hike along the river in with the bouncy activities director, I suggested that he have a manicure. His hands were taking a beating with all that exposure and “a ragged cuticle” I joked “just might cost him a stroke while putting.” My case was weak, but he had the manicure, saw the inside of the spa facility, and met a delightfully informative esthetician.

His afternoon golf was a total success— It is in the hands, isn’t it? And his aprés golf massage was nothing but the manly thing for releasing tension from the 18 holes.
