A major plus to this development is the David Leadbetter Golf Academy. David, recognized as one of the best international golf instructors, is based at Champions Gate. The majority of top touring golf pros visit to brush up their games. The day I played, Nick Price and Charles Howell, III were on property getting a few pointers and doing some fine-tuning. The Golf Academy is open to the public for individual or group clinics.

This outstanding development was recent host to the Office Depot Father/Son Challenge. NBC-TV carried the final rounds that featured such greats as Raymond Floyd, Lee Trevino, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Dave Stockton, and Hale Irwin. Defending champions Craig and Kevin Stadler who won their first title in 2002 with a one-hole sudden death victory over Hale and Steve Irwin also played. Raymond Floyd won the event five times, with Raymond Jr. in 1995, 1996, & 1997 and with his son Robert in 2000 & 2001. Jack and Gary Nicklaus won in 1999 after a three-hole sudden death playoff with the Floyd’s, while Bob and David Charles won the 1998 event. Many of these played in the recent event.

Although I did not have time to play the National Course, I hope to return soon and enjoy this golf course again. I understand it is a much kinder and gentler course for the bogey golfer.
